Tiger's Cub | Archer of Essex
I was called upon to do this scroll just a few days before the event, and though I wish I had had more time, I think it came out well for the time allotted.
The recipient's persona is specific to the English of the Battle of Agincourt, and so the extant I used was The Hours of Elizabeth the Queen, which dates to perfectly to 1415. I was able to borrow a "T" from a different page of the same manuscript as to fit the pre-existing words, composed by Lady Eleanor Grey. I thoroughly enjoyed this style of illumination, and hope to use this manuscript again for future reference. If I was to do this scroll again, I probably would have spaced out the lines more to better utilize the space and match the extant. As I had limited time to plan and execute this scroll however, I am pleased with the overall result. I completed this scroll using gouache, watercolor, and ink. It was presented to it's recipient on The 2nd of October, 2021, at the Closing of the Inne at Coldwood. |

Award of Arms | Octavia Valeria
I was thrilled to hear that someone had seen my very first scroll - a Roman Tiger's Cub award - and wanted one similar to it! This Award of Arms took inspiration from two different early Roman mosaics - one from the Vatican Museum, the other from the Museum of Antakya. It was noted to me that the recipient enjoys ducks, bees, swordplay and writing, and so I incorporated symbols of each into the corners of the scroll.
It was my first time doing the calligraphy for a Roman scroll. Despite learning the hand just for this project, I am quite happy with the result of the rustic Roman capitals I went with for the words, which were composed by Michael Acrensis. This scroll was created with gouache and black ink, and awarded at the Eleventh Ethereal Court of the Eastern Consules on the 11th of August, 2021. |

Silver Wheel | Kara Irini bint Todori
This was by far the most challenging scroll I've done. I referenced an extant from a 16th-17th century Turkish Qur'an, in accordance with the 16th century Turkish persona.
I was nervous about fitting in all the detail of the illumination, and so stretched out the dimensions to make more room. However, that then changed the proportions, which I am ultimately not pleased with. The words, composed by Countess Marguerite inghean Lachlainn, were done in a style to evoke the feel of Arabic. This was a challenge to size and space as well, which left too much room on the bottom. What I did enjoy was the density of illumination and the chance to try something new. I have much to improve on for next time something like this lands on my desk. This scroll was completed using gouache and black ink, and was awarded at the Ninth Ethereal Court of the Eastern Consules on the 16th of May, 2021. |

Silver Tiger | Abel Atte Watere
The extant from the Alphonso Psalter that I used for this scroll fit absolutely perfectly for both the persona and the award. Not only is the period and location correct, but the fighter is depicted in blue and there is a large white feline whose spot I filled with the Silver Tiger symbol.
The words, composed by Nicol mac Donnachaidh, fill the page just how I wanted them to, and the first letter "S" allowed me to use the same capital from the extant. I am very happy with how this scroll came out, but if I did it again I would add some filler bars of illumination to fill in short lines of text. This scroll was completed using gouache and ink, and was awarded at the Seventh Ethereal Court of the Eastern Consules on the 14th of March, 2021. |
