Silver Crescent | Lisabetta Medaglia
I had never done just the calligraphy for a scroll before, but when Camille des Jardens asked me to do the lettering for Lisabetta Medaglia's Silver Crescent, I couldn't say no. Based on an extant from the Mira Calligraphae Monumenta, I had great fun designing the flourishes of this lettering style. The style most closely resembled the gothic that I was already familiar with, so tweaking what I knew to match the extant was fairly simple, though if I was to do it again I would try to leave just a bit more space between the lines to leave room for the flourishes. Gold gouache was used for the cadel, and black ink for the calligraphy.
The words were composed by Lady Eleanor Grey, and the scroll was awarded at the First Ethereal Court of Ionnes and Honig on the 20th of Fabruary, 2022. |

Silver Crescent | Ciara McRobbie
The Book of Kells provided the perfect extant to reference for this Scottish persona's Silver Crescent. The page I selected includes several intricate areas of knotwork and patterning that had to be reconstructed in some areas due to being sections of them being worn off on the original. Additionally, the dog heads at the top were modified to better resemble the well loved dogs of the recipient. Once again, a new calligraphy hand was learned! A challenging style for me, as I'm used to angular, condensed lettering, but I think it came out well. If I was to make it again, I would try to better follow the proportions of the extant, which was also a challenging thing to replicate. Materials used were gouache and ink.
Eleanor Grey composed the words, and the scroll was presented at Balfar's Challenge on the 23rd of April, 2022. |
